I think about painting all of the time. I even dream about painting. For some it is about capturing the light, or relationships with color, or that moment in time. For me it is the sheer fun of putting the picture in my head onto a canvas or paper, the joy of letting go, the “just do it”leap into making something from an empty space.
My husband and I enjoy antique car shows. I guess it isn’t surprising that cars and trucks are some of my favorite painting subjects. I like to imagine them when they were brand-new. How proud their owners must have been. Cars are an iconic collection of Americana. I think American men treat their cars like a cowboy treats his horse. They pet ‘em, they groom ‘em and they take ‘em to the vet!
Sometimes I come up with the name of a painting before I have even firmed up the picture in my mind. Like “Mama’s Dishes”. You don’t have to know exactly how you are going to paint those dishes because you know mama loved those dishes and set a proud table. That is what I really want to paint. Those things we all recognize, mama’s dishes, a man’s well-worn work truck or a three-year old’s Superman costume. Little things with depths of meaning.
One picture is worth a thousand words. But a thousand pictures can say it in a thousand different ways.
My name is Janet and I am an artist.
